BBCAT'S PRESENT GOALS:

GOAL ONE: To promote a reduction in use of fossil fuels and greater use of clean energy by government entities (city, county, state, Big Bend region, and educational), private enterprise, and individuals.


TASKS:
1. Assist City of Tallahassee in developing and implementing a strong clean energy portfolio.
2. Support Leon County in implementing its Smart Energy plan.
3. Assist the Leon County School Board in developing a clean energy plan.
4. Continue to press the governor and legislature to fund climate protection and clean energy.
5. Identify and promote other affordable clean energy initiatives.
6. Work with local higher education entities to promote energy efficiency and education.
7. Establish a “Go Solar” initiative.

 

GOAL TWO: To monitor and oppose any activities that increase carbon emissions in the Big Bend region, especially the building of coal-burning power plants:


KEY EVENTS (CURRENT AND FUTURE):
• Local government comprehensive planning process (Taylor County DCA; governor & cabinet)
• Public Service Commission needs determination
• Power plant siting process with DEP (governor and cabinet)
• City Commission go/no go decision


TASKS:
1. Outreach to City Commission decision makers.
2. Counter City Commission rationale for TEC.
3. Liaise with No Coal Coalition on litigation of coal plant.
4. Work for moratorium on coal plants statewide.
5. Monitor power plant siting process.

 

GOAL THREE: To keep abreast of climate and energy development and help inform a broad range of communities through outreach and education.


TASKS:
1. Develop outreach kits, presentations, exhibits (on climate, clean energy, home energy efficiency, solar power) for public events (different audiences).
2. Revise web site.
3. Keep each other informed on climate and clean energy issues.
4. Testify; write op-eds, letters to the editor, zings, etc.; participate in workshops.
5. Work with local media (print and broadcast) to educate the public.
6. Monitor legislation and non-profit group activities.
7. Monitor Florida Energy Commission’s review of state statutes and codes that hinder/obstruct clean energy implementation.
8. Monitor Century Commission.
9. Monitor legislative energy bills.
